Pet-Friendly Window Treatments Your Cats Will Love
Choosing window treatments that can withstand your cats’ curiosity is easier than you think. At Barrington Draperies & Shutters, our team has been helping Barrington homeowners find visually stunning window treatments that elevate their home's style while standing up to cats for years. If you're in the market for new window treatments and aren't sure what the best move is for you and your beloved pet, here's where to begin.
Best Blinds for Cats: Why Cordless Window Treatments Work Best
Corded blinds and shades are a strangulation risk for pets and kids. With the curiosity cats bring to the table, and their sheer determination to do exactly what they want, cords pose multiple dangers. They want to pull and bat at them, which can tangle them. This can bring the whole thing tumbling down and make corded blinds look horribly uneven. That’s why cordless designs are the best window blinds for cats and the people who love them.
Cordless pet-safe shades and blinds create a clean look and reduce temptation. If you motorize them, your cat will still eyeball the rising and falling shade. Still, you can adjust it for light and privacy from anywhere and rest easy knowing you’ve chosen the best window blinds for your cats.
Best Blinds for Cat Owners: Materials and Styles to Consider
When it comes to cats, some materials hold up better than others. Fabric blinds, for instance, are made from a lighter fabric that could tear or fray when your cat claws at them. Similarly, although wood blinds are durable, they’re not ideal for cats because they can scratch the wood, which will detract from the overall aesthetic.
For blinds in homes with cats, we recommend:
- EverWood® Faux Wood Blinds: An alternative to natural wood blinds that maintains rustic warmth and beauty while offering resistance to scratches. Plus, they are easy to maintain with a quick wipe-down using a damp, microfiber cloth.
- Modern Precious Metals® Mini Blinds: Made with robust aluminum that bounces back into place without cracking or kinking. The scratch-resistant, water-resistant slats are perfect for homes with cats.
- Vertical Blinds: Ideal for large windows, they make it more difficult, though not impossible, for an agile cat to climb. They also complement many interior design styles.
Best Shades for Cats: Styles and Materials to Consider
The right material matters almost as much as style here. Shades give Barrington homeowners the most freedom to play around with color, pattern, and style. They are also a solid choice for homes with cats and other pets thanks to their cordless appearance, premium stitching, and layered construction.
Some of our favorite shades for homes with cats are:
- Designer Solar Shades: Sleek fabrics designed to control light, privacy, heat, and UV light.
- Designer Roller Shades: Available in over 300 fabrics and color combinations, these are ideal for modern and contemporary home interiors.
